Buena Vista PTA submitted a proposal to United Way's HOG Day program this year and recently received word that we have been chosen!  HOG Day (Hands On Greenville Day) is a volunteer program organized by United Way.  We submitted a list of projects to help 'beautify' our school.  They will provide us with a team of volunteers on Saturday, May 4th from 8am - 12pm to assist in completing our projects. We'd like to invite any Buena Vista families to come out on that day and help out with our Beautify Buena Vista Day!  All projects will be taking place outdoors, from mulching, planting, weeding, painting, repairing, etc....Join us for some volunteer fun.  Wear your hats and sunscreen and bring plenty of water.  For more information, please contact Cindy Marchbanks:  the_marchbanks@yahoo.com.

Congratulations to FIRST GRADE for winning the grade level contest for Boosterthon.  They had the top per student collections for Buena Vista.  They will be having a Wii dance party in the atrium!  The dance party will be scheduled after Spring Break!  

We are beginning the planning process for school year 2013-2014. I would like to give you the opportunity to tell me if you have an interest in your child(ren) being placed in the Buena Vista Learning Community in first grade. Please fill out the attached interest inventory if you would like your child(ren) to be considered for inclusion in the Learning Community, then please forward your interest inventory and the teacher recommendation form to your child(ren)’s current kindergarten teacher. The teacher will then fill out the form and return both forms to Dr. Mohr. Be aware that the deadline for classroom planning is March 28, 2013.

If you do NOT wish for your child to be considered for inclusion in the Buena Vista Learning Community for first grade, please fill out the attached “Opt Out” form and send it to Dr. Mohr.

Opt-Out Form for 2013/2014

The creation of a positive learning environment for every student is one of the main goals of both Greenville County Schools and Buena Vista Elementary. I encourage parental input towards this end; however, the final decision for student placement on class rolls will rest with our teachers and the administrative team.  We welcome parental input that will help us make the best decision possible when choosing a teacher for students.  These are the appropriate ways to have parental input:

☺    Request that a child not be placed in a class with another child:  This should be an extreme case, not a case where one child does not like another.  In life, we need to learn to get along and resolve conflicts.

☺    Describe the type of learning environment that is best for your child.  Also, share any specific issues or concerns that may affect your child’s learning.

All requests must be made in writing to Dr. Mohr by April 26, 2013.

ALL MONEY COLLECTED WILL BE DONATED TO HARVEST HOPE FOOD BANK. Harvest Hope is a non-profit local charity that helps feed the hungry in our community. Help Buena Vista GIVE BACK to our community and enjoy a healthy bowl of soup. The soups are from our ‘Culinary Creations’ menu!

Please look for your ‘meal reservation ticket’ in Tuesday, January 29th folder. After dinner, we will hold a brief PTA meeting in the atrium. Dr. Summers from Summers Orthodontics, the Boosterthon team, and Coops Health & Fitness will present at our ‘LIVE HEALTHY’ program. PTA will have 3 great door prizes (Zike, Razor Ripstik, Wii U) drawn at 7:30 pm , concluding our evening. You must be present to win.

Every Buena Vista student will receive 3 tickets for the door prizes in their Tuesday, February 5th folder. Please bring these tickets on February 11th for your chance to win!

The school Book Fair will be open this evening from 5:15 - 6:30.

The school district is directing all schools to follow a ‘check in’ procedure that is not a self-service kiosk. This means that all visitors/volunteers to the school building will be checked in at the window by a school employee.
A member of Buena Vista’s front office staff will be present at the window to check in each person visiting or volunteering at Buena Vista. Please bring your driver’s license with you when you come into the school.

• Check your child for flu symptoms. Keep your child home if he/she has a fever of 100 degrees or higher. Children with flu will need to stay home until the fever is gone for 24 hours without taking medicines to reduce fever. The usual time is 3-5 days.
• Symptoms of flu can range from fever, to runny noses, body aches, headaches, feeling tired or a combination of symptoms.
• Practice frequent hand washing and covering your nose and mouth when you cough or sneeze at home.
• If symptoms present as nausea and vomiting your child should remain home for at least 24 hours after the last episode of vomiting.
