The Buena Vista PTA offers numerous programs focused on creating meaningful engagement of families in student success. All of our programs ensure the children of BVE have what they need to reach their academic goals and excel in educational achievement.
Backpack Buddies provides weekly food care packages for Buena Vista families in need. This outreach is supported by generous financial support and food donations from our parents, teachers, local businesses, and other community organizations. If you are interested in donating, watch the weekly Newsflash for a list of suggested items. Donations are accepted throughout the year and can be placed in the drop-off box located near the atrium. If your family is in need of assistance, and qualifies for free/reduced meals, please contact a BV Guidance Counselor. All requests remain confidential.
PTA Reflections is a nationally acclaimed student recognition program which encourages artistic creativity in the classroom and at home. Students of all grades and abilities may participate and explore the arts based on a determined theme for the current school year. Students may choose to submit an entry in one or all of the available arts categories: dance choreography, film production, literature, music composition, photography, and visual arts. Entries are divided into primary (K-2) and intermediate (3-5) divisions, and the winners at the school level move on to the next round of judging with the chance to win national awards. The arts — and the National PTA Reflections program — support student success and serve as a valuable tool for building strong partnerships in our school community.
Brainbuilders is an in-school tutoring program where students are referred by classroom teachers based on academic need. Each student is placed with a volunteer tutor who comes at a scheduled time each week throughout the year to provide one-on-one, teacher-directed, assistance.
Early Risers meets the needs of our students who need help improving standardized testing scores. Selected students attend from 7:15-7:55am on Tuesday and Thursday mornings for computer-based instruction, practice, and assistance in our computer lab from parent volunteers.
Based on the belief that Reading Encourages Academic Development, the iREAD program encourages students to read, while also providing a forum for students to practice comprehension and writing. Each month, parents initial the provided paper calendar on 20 or more days when the student reads at least 20 minutes. At the end of the month, each participant receives a small prize for returning the calendar, and their name is placed in a drawing to receive a $10 gift certificate to a local business. Students also have the option to complete a brief review or recommendation of the book they have been reading, which provides them the possibility of either reading to a member of the Administration (K5-1) or presenting their review/recommendation on BVTV News (2-5). As an added bonus, any student who returns every calendar during the school year receives a bonus prize.
Kids Helping Kids is a program designed to help brighten the winter holidays for families. The program is generously supported by monetary donations (ranging from loose change to dollar bills) from Buena Vista families. Volunteer shoppers use these funds to purchase holiday gifts for BV students of the families who request assistance. While the primary goal is to provide clothing, at times funding has allowed the purchase of small toys or school supplies.
If you are in need of assistance, please contact a BV Guidance Counselor. All information remains confidential.
Bingo comes around each Spring and helps our families celebrate the end of the year, while also helping out our BV families in need of food. Bingo cards are “purchased” by donating food to our Backpack Buddies Program (monetary donations are also accepted). There are lots of fun prizes donated by area business and supportive friends. You don't want to miss this exciting evening of family fun!
